Description

Development of a transport system with reusable key components for NASA began in 1972 at North American Rockwell and a number of other companies. The total weight of the ready-to-go space shuttle is 2,055 tons. It can carry a payload of 30 tons into orbit up to 965 km above the earth. The orbiter prototype Enterprise was completed in 1976. The Enterprise was used to test the flight and landing characteristics in the atmosphere and to develop the space shuttle. The first space shuttle to be launched on April 12, 1981 was the Columbia. From 1983, NASA significantly expanded its scientific experiments and strategic military activities in collaboration with the U.S. Air Force with the completion of additional orbiters. Communication and research satellites were transported into space, repairs were carried out on-site, and the American space station was set up and deployed. The Challenger was launched on April 4, 1983 for the first time. The Discovery started for the first time on August 30, 1984. Since October 3, 1985, the fourth space shuttle, the Atlantis, has been used for 26 missions. The Endeavor was launched on May 7, 1992 for the first time. This shuttle was equipped with numerous new devices and computers, which expanded its capabilities. The orbiters can remain in space for up to 28 days. The enormous structural and thermal loads to which they are exposed during takeoff and landing require constant inspection and maintenance of all components as well as improvements to the equipment. The heat shield on the front and bottom of the space shuttle is particularly important and must be checked and repaired regularly. The Challenger was lost in 1986 and the Columbia in 2003 due to two tragic accidents that killed the entire crew. Flights were resumed after a two-year hiatus and extensive changes to the orbit and main tank. When it landed at Edwards Air Force Base, California on August 9, 2005, Discovery's 31st flight brought the 114th NASA space shuttle mission to a successful conclusion.
